History of PCS

PCS has been providing a distinctively Christian Education for the youth of South Mississippi for over 40 years!!

Presbyterian Christian School began in the minds and hearts of several men at Bay Street Presbyterian Church in 1975.  The primary objective was to build an elementary school of grades one through six in Hattiesburg that would be able to educate children from a distinctively Biblical perspective.  After a year in the planning stages, the Bay Street Presbyterian Christian Day School opened its doors in September of 1976 at Bay Street Presbyterian Church with 23 students in kindergarten through grade two.  By Christmas of 1978, the enrollment had grown to approximately 55 students in kindergarten through grade four, and space became a problem.  At the invitation of the Woodland Presbyterian Church Session, the Board of Directors chose to move the school to the newly completed building which was built to house Woodland Presbyterian Church on Lincoln Road.  At this time, the name of the school was changed to Presbyterian Christian School and the effort became the joint venture of both churches.

In the years since these beginnings, many changes have taken place at PCS. With the acquisition of the K-3 and K-4 programs at First Presbyterian Church, PCS serves a student population of nearly 1,000 students in grades K-3 through 12 and employs a faculty and staff of over 90.

The secondary campus, which houses grades 7-12 on Bonhomie Road, was completed in January of 2000. The gym and cafetorium were completed in May of 2002. Since then the academic building has been added on to twice, and a baseball field, football complex with track, and a new field house have been built.  Construction on an addition of science labs to the secondary building was completed in April of 2012.

The new elementary campus, which houses grades K5-6, is located on WSF Tatum Drive, adjacent to the secondary campus.   This new elementary building was opened in August of 2012 and houses almost 500 students.  Future plans are to build additional buildings and facilities on this campus.

Although growth has taken place and physical changes have occurred, PCS remains committed to the original goals of teaching sound academics in a Christian context and from a perspective that openly acknowledges God’s place as Creator and Sustainer of all reality.  We continue to exist to assist parents in providing a sound educational experience for their children in an environment that seeks to build Christian character.
